Stefanie Mitchell was among just four leaders from Oklahoma to participate in the 40th annual Community Development Institute (CDI) at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) this summer.
Mitchell completed her Year 2 curriculum during the weeklong intensive institute, which brings together local government officials, community leaders, and economic development professionals from across the region.
Founded in 1987 in partnership with regional utility leaders, CDI established the foundation for a nation-wide model designed to equip local leaders with practical, hands-on strategies. The three-year program guides cohorts through an applied curriculum focused on identifying local assets, establishing long-term goals, and fostering multi-sector partnerships between schools, businesses, and civic organizations to drive economic growth and improve quality of life.
For Mitchell, participating in the program reinforces the shared opportunities and obstacles facing smaller municipalities.
“Rural community development definitely has its unique challenges, but this program reminded me that Westville isn't alone,” Mitchell said. “I’m bringing back a wealth of information to support our school district and town, along with connections to a fantastic network of individuals and organizations doing this vital work across the region.”
Community and school leaders praised Mitchell’s continued commitment to local progress, noting that her completion of Year 2 brings valuable resources, fresh perspectives, and a expanding network of regional partners back to benefit both Westville Public Schools and the broader Westville community.
